Julián Álvarez was born on 31 January 2000 in Calchín, a small town of around 3,500 people in Argentina's Córdoba province, and showed obsessive dedication to football from a young age, staying behind after training to practise finishing, free kicks, and headers from every angle long before his tenth birthday. Despite interest from River Plate, Boca Juniors, and other clubs, his family resisted moving him away from Calchín for several years, valuing his simple, close-knit childhood. Álvarez eventually joined River Plate's academy in his mid-teens, making his first-team debut in 2018 under manager Marcelo Gallardo, who moulded him into a modern, hard-pressing forward. He was part of the River Plate squad that won a historic Copa Libertadores final against fierce rivals Boca Juniors in Madrid in 2018, and his breakout 2021 season, in which he won the league's top scorer award, propelled him to wider recognition. Manchester City signed Álvarez in 2022, and he quickly became a key attacking option under Pep Guardiola, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble in his debut season. Nicknamed "La Araña" (The Spider) for his relentless pressing and ability to weave through tight spaces, he moved to Atlético Madrid in 2024.
