Joline Johansson (née Henry) was born on 29 September 1982 in Whanganui, New Zealand, and was raised by her grandparents after being adopted as tamaiti whāngai under tikanga Māori. A versatile defender equally capable at goal defence, goal keeper or wing defence, she began her professional career at just 15 with the Western Flyers before making her Silver Ferns on-court debut against Australia in 2004. Johansson went on to win Test honours across a decade in the black dress, taking World Cup silver with the Silver Ferns at both the 2007 and 2011 tournaments, and Commonwealth Games medals at Melbourne 2006 (gold) and Delhi 2010 (silver). Renowned for her relentless defensive pressure and ability to read the game, she played the bulk of her domestic career for Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic before later spells with the Northern Mystics and Central Pulse, retiring from the international game in 2014 after more than a decade at the top level.
