The greatest receiver in football history began at Mississippi Valley State — the most productive small-school career ever.
Jerry Lee Rice was born in Starkville, Mississippi in 1962. He attended Mississippi Valley State — a small historically Black university in the SWAC conference at the Division I-AA level. His college career at Valley State produced 301 receptions for 4,693 yards and 51 touchdowns across four seasons. He was a Division I-AA All-American. The numbers were staggering for the competition level but scouts were uncertain how they would translate to the highest level. San Francisco 49ers selected him 16th overall in the 1985 NFL Draft and he went on to become the greatest receiver in NFL history. His college career at a small school is cited in every discussion of small-school talent — a reminder that the size of a programme has no bearing on the ceiling of an individual player. His route running, concentration and work ethic — developed at Valley State — were the same qualities that made him incomparable at the professional level. His story is one of college football's most important: the greatest player in the history of his position came from a programme most people had never heard of.
