The only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in history — Ohio State's greatest player.
Archie Mason Griffin was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1954. He attended Ohio State University and became the only player in college football history to win the Heisman Trophy twice — receiving the award in 1974 and 1975 under coach Woody Hayes. He rushed for 5,589 yards across his four seasons at Ohio State — at the time the most in Big Ten Conference history. He participated in four Rose Bowl games, winning two. He was the starting running back on Ohio State teams that won three Big Ten titles. His rushing totals included 100 or more yards in 31 consecutive games — a college record at the time. He was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the 1976 NFL Draft and played seven professional seasons. His NFL career was solid but not exceptional — the greatness of his Ohio State career was not fully matched at the professional level, a pattern that makes his college achievement all the more celebrated. He later served as president and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association for over 20 years, becoming one of the most prominent ambassadors for the university. His two Heisman Trophies remain unique in the sport's history and it is likely no player will match that achievement.
