Jason Holder is a Barbadian cricketer and former West Indies captain who became the world's No. 1 Test all-rounder, leading his country through two World Cups and a 2016 T20 World Cup title.
In 2019, Jason Holder was ranked the world's No. 1 Test all-rounder by the ICC, a ranking reflecting both his steady accumulation of more than 3,000 Test runs and his ability to generate genuine swing and movement with the ball — an achievement all the more notable given the relative decline of West Indies cricket during his era. He made his One Day International debut for the West Indies against Australia in 2013, and his Test debut against New Zealand in Bridgetown in June 2014, contributing a fighting half-century. Holder was appointed West Indies' ODI captain in December 2014 at just 23, becoming the youngest-ever West Indian captain, and soon took over the Test captaincy as well. He silenced early doubts about his leadership with a match-saving maiden Test century against England in 2015, and reached the peak of his individual form in 2017, scoring a career-best 202 not out in a Test win over England. Holder captained the West Indies at the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups, and was part of the squad, though not a playing member, that won the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup under Darren Sammy. In 2019, he was ranked the world's No. 1 Test all-rounder and named West Indies Test Player of the Year, a ranking he reclaimed in 2022. He became the first West Indies male player to take a hat-trick in T20 International cricket, and led the team through the return of international cricket during the COVID-19 pandemic, for which he received the 2021 ICC Spirit of Cricket Award. Holder has also had a productive T20 franchise career, winning the Caribbean Premier League with the Barbados Tridents in 2014 and 2019, the latter as captain, and playing in the Indian Premier League for several franchises.
