Jamal Murray was born on 23 February 1997 in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, to Sylvia, who is from Syria, and Roger Murray, who was born in Jamaica and moved to Canada at nine. His father competed in track and field and played basketball against Kitchener resident Lennox Lewis before Lewis began his professional boxing career, and later trained Jamal intensively from a young age. Murray attended Grand River Collegiate Institute before transferring to Orangeville Prep, and played one season at the University of Kentucky under John Calipari, earning first-team All-SEC honours in 2016. The Denver Nuggets selected Murray seventh overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, and he developed into one of the league's most dangerous clutch scorers, forming a formidable partnership with Nikola Jokić that led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship in 2023. Murray earned his first All-Star and All-NBA selections in 2026, and continues to represent Canada's national team, remaining one of the most important building blocks of the Nuggets' championship-calibre core throughout the 2020s.
