Hoddle spent 12 seasons at Tottenham, winning the FA Cup twice, in 1981 and 1982, and the UEFA Cup in 1984, establishing himself as the creative heartbeat of the side. His long-range strikes and pinpoint passing made him a fixture of highlight reels throughout the 1980s, though his languid style occasionally drew scepticism from England managers wary of his defensive workrate. In 1987, Hoddle moved to Monaco in France, where he played under a young manager named Arsène Wenger and won the French league title in his first season, further burnishing his reputation as a player better appreciated on the continent than at home. He earned 53 caps for England across his career, though he was controversially left out of the 1986 World Cup squad's starting side for long periods despite his ability. After retiring as a player, Hoddle built an extensive managerial career, starting as player-manager at Swindon Town before taking charge of Chelsea, England, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
