Eloise Southby-Halbish was born on 6 July 1976, the daughter of Carlton VFL premiership player Geoff Southby, and made her international debut for Australia in early 1998 at just 21. She was initially overlooked for the 1998 Commonwealth Games and 1999 World Championships during a period when Australia was especially rich in shooting talent, but was recalled to the national squad in 2000. Southby-Halbish went on to win 34 Test caps for Australia, forming one of the sport's most celebrated shooting partnerships with fellow goaler Sharelle McMahon at both club and international level. Domestically she made 132 appearances for Melbourne Phoenix between 1997 and 2005, serving as co-captain alongside McMahon and winning five premierships, before retiring due to a recurring ankle injury shortly after her fifth title in 2005. After retiring she became a prominent netball broadcaster, commentating for the ABC and later Fox Sports on the newly launched ANZ Championship, and co-wrote a novel with a netball theme.
