Déguy Alain Didier Zokora was born on 14 December 1980 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and joined the Académie MimoSifcom alongside his younger brother Armando, with both offered professional contracts by ASEC Mimosas. Tragedy struck early in his career when Armando drowned while celebrating at a beach in Grand-Bassam — a loss Zokora has honoured ever since with a tattoo of his brother's name on his forearm. Zokora began his senior career with ASEC Mimosas before moving to Belgian club Racing Genk in 2000, where he won the Belgian First Division title. A move to France's Saint-Étienne in 2004 raised his profile further as one of Ligue 1's finest defensive midfielders, leading Tottenham Hotspur to sign him in 2006. At Tottenham, Zokora won the 2008 League Cup, though he was often deployed in a deeper defensive role than he preferred, given his own attacking instincts on the ball. He moved to Sevilla in 2009, adding a Copa del Rey to his collection, before spells at Trabzonspor in Turkey, Akhisarspor, and clubs in India and Indonesia extended a well-travelled career into his mid-thirties. Zokora became the most capped player in Ivory Coast's history, representing his country at three consecutive World Cups — 2006, 2010, and 2014 — as part of a golden generation of Ivorian talent that included Didier Drogba and the Touré brothers, though the team never quite matched its individual quality with the major trophy success many expected. After retiring, Zokora returned to Ivorian football as an assistant manager at AFAD Djékanou.
