Denis Shapovalov is a Canadian professional tennis player known for his single-handed backhand, who helped Canada win its first Davis Cup title in 2022.

Denis Viktorovich Shapovalov was born on April 15, 1999, in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Russian-Jewish parents who emigrated to Canada when he was young, settling near Toronto, where he began playing tennis. He turned professional in 2017, developing into one of the most naturally talented left-handed players of his generation, renowned for a fluid one-handed backhand and explosive shot-making. Shapovalov reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10 on September 21, 2020, becoming, at the time, the third-highest-ranked Canadian man in ATP history behind Milos Raonic. His best Grand Slam result came at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, where he reached the semi-finals. Shapovalov helped Canada win its first-ever Davis Cup title in 2022, contributing to a golden period for Canadian men's tennis alongside contemporaries including Félix Auger-Aliassime, whom he had known since their junior days, having won the 2015 US Open boys' doubles title together.
