Bianca Vanessa Andreescu was born on 16 June 2000 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, to Romanian parents Nicu and Maria, and moved with her mother to Romania as a young child, where she began playing tennis at seven under coach Gabriel Hristache. She returned to Canada at 11 and joined the Ontario Racquet Club before entering Tennis Canada's national training system, turning professional in 2017. Andreescu, who tried soccer, swimming, gymnastics, and skating before settling on tennis, won 19 junior singles titles before her breakout 2019 season: she won her first WTA title at Indian Wells, then became the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open in 50 years, defeating Serena Williams after the American retired injured. Andreescu capped that remarkable season by winning the 2019 US Open, defeating Serena Williams in the final to become the first Canadian, male or female, ever to win a Grand Slam singles title, and the first teenager to win a major since Maria Sharapova in 2006. She reached a career-high ranking of world No. 4 that October. A serious knee injury sidelined Andreescu for over a year following her US Open triumph, and while she has continued competing on the WTA Tour, she has not fully replicated that breakthrough form since, remaining nonetheless one of the most significant figures in Canadian tennis history.
