Dearica Hamby was born and grew up developing into one of the most versatile forwards in women's college basketball at Wake Forest University, before the San Antonio Stars selected her sixth overall in the 2015 WNBA Draft. Hamby was traded to the Las Vegas Aces and developed into one of the WNBA's most efficient sixth players, winning WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year honours in both 2019 and 2022, providing a rare combination of scoring, rebounding, and playmaking off the bench that made her one of the league's most valuable role players. Hamby's departure from Las Vegas in early 2023 became a significant news story when she alleged the Aces had discriminated against her for becoming pregnant, a complaint the WNBA later investigated and found the team had violated league rules regarding her treatment; the Aces were subsequently fined and stripped of draft picks as a result. Hamby was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she has continued her career as one of the league's most well-rounded frontcourt players, renowned for her rebounding tenacity and ability to facilitate offence from the forward positions.
