Determined Scottish midfielder who overcame a serious illness to forge a distinguished career at Manchester United.
Darren Barr Fletcher was born in Dalkeith, Scotland on 1 February 1984. He joined Manchester United's academy and made his first-team debut in 2003. A tireless box-to-box midfielder, Fletcher became an important figure in Sir Alex Ferguson's side, winning five Premier League titles, one Champions League and one League Cup. His career was disrupted by ulcerative colitis from 2011, which saw him miss almost two years of football. He made a courageous comeback and later served as club captain. After leaving United in 2015, he joined West Brom and then Stoke City before retiring. Internationally, he earned 80 caps for Scotland and captained his country.
