Robert Dennis "Danny" Blanchflower was born on 10 February 1926 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the oldest of five children of John and Selina Blanchflower. His brother Jackie also became a professional footballer, playing for Manchester United and Northern Ireland. Danny trained as an electrician and served in the Royal Air Force before beginning his football career with Glentoran in 1946. Blanchflower moved to England with Barnsley in 1949, then Aston Villa in 1951, before Tottenham Hotspur signed him for £30,000 in 1954. Renowned for his elegant passing, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate the tempo of a match, he became club captain and the driving force behind Tottenham's greatest era. Blanchflower captained Spurs to English football's first 20th-century league and FA Cup double in 1960-61, a campaign that began with a record 11 consecutive top-flight victories and ended with the title won by eight clear points. He retained the FA Cup the following year and, in 1963, captained Tottenham to victory over Atlético Madrid in the European Cup Winners' Cup final — the first European trophy won by a British club. Blanchflower earned two FWA Footballer of the Year awards, in 1958 and 1961, and captained Northern Ireland to the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup. After retiring in 1964, he became a respected football journalist and later managed Northern Ireland and Chelsea. The Times named him the greatest player in Tottenham's history in 2009. Blanchflower died of pneumonia on 9 December 1993, aged 67.
