Fua Leiofi Bundellu Aki was born on 7 April 1990 in the Auckland suburb of Ōtāhuhu, New Zealand, to Samoan parents Hercules and Sautia Aki, and was raised in Manurewa alongside five siblings. His mother named him "Bundellu" in tribute to the doctor who delivered him, and a childhood rugby coach later shortened this to "Bundee," the name by which he has been known ever since. Aki attended Manurewa High School, making the First XV, but did not turn professional immediately after leaving school, instead working as a bank teller in Auckland to support his young family while playing for Counties Manukau. He won a Super Rugby title with the Chiefs in 2013 before moving to Ireland in 2014 to join Connacht, helping the province win a first-ever Pro12 title in 2016. Aki qualified for Ireland through residency and made his international debut in November 2017, going on to become one of the most powerful and tactically intelligent centres in world rugby, renowned for his crash-ball running and increasingly refined distribution skills. He became an Irish citizen in 2024 while maintaining dual citizenship with New Zealand.
