Born on 4 December 1931 in Fort William, Ontario, Alex Delvecchio made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings on 25 March 1951 and went on to play every one of his 1,549 regular-season games for the franchise, a level of loyalty matched by only two other players in NHL history, Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidström. He broke into the lineup full-time the following season, part of a Red Wings dynasty built around the legendary 'Production Line' of Gordie Howe, Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay. Delvecchio soon replaced Abel at centre on that line, playing alongside Howe and Lindsay as Detroit won the Stanley Cup in 1952, 1954 and 1955. He was named team captain in 1962, a role he held for 12 seasons — a Red Wings record until later broken by Yzerman — while continuing to produce at an elite level; in the 1968-69 season, at age 37, he centred a second iteration of the Production Line with Howe and Frank Mahovlich that set league records for goals and assists by a forward line. Renowned for his gentlemanly conduct, Delvecchio won the Lady Byng Trophy three times, in 1959, 1966 and 1969, and was selected to 13 NHL All-Star Games. He remained remarkably durable throughout his career, playing 548 consecutive regular-season games at one stretch and missing only 43 games total across 24 seasons. Delvecchio retired in 1973 with 456 goals, 825 assists and 1,281 points across 1,550 regular-season games, all with Detroit, and was immediately named the Red Wings' head coach, later adding the general manager role until 1977. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977 and named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. He died on 1 July 2025 at age 93.
