Alessandro Nesta was born on 19 March 1976 in Rome, Italy, and joined Lazio's youth academy at nine years old, progressing through the club's ranks to make his first-team debut in 1993 as an 17-year-old. He quickly established himself as one of the most technically gifted defenders of his generation, prized for his elegant positioning, precise tackling, and rare ability to read the game rather than rely on brute physicality. Nesta spent nine seasons as the defensive cornerstone of Lazio, helping the club win a first Serie A title in over two decades in 2000, alongside a Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. His transfer to AC Milan in 2002, in one of the most contentious deals of that Serie A transfer window given Lazio's financial difficulties at the time, marked the beginning of a decade in which he formed one of football's most celebrated centre-back partnerships alongside Paolo Maldini. At Milan, Nesta won two UEFA Champions League titles, in 2003 and 2007, along with two further Serie A titles, cementing his reputation as one of the finest defenders of his era — four times he was named Serie A's Defender of the Year, and he was included in the UEFA Team of the Year on four occasions. In 2004, FIFA named him among the top 100 greatest living footballers as part of the organisation's centenary celebrations. Nesta earned 78 caps for Italy and was part of the country's victorious 2006 World Cup squad, though a thigh injury sustained during the tournament ruled him out of the knockout stages. He finished his playing career in Major League Soccer with the Montreal Impact and briefly in India, before moving into coaching, including stints with Frosinone and Monza in Serie B and Serie A. Nesta was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
