Yu Darvish was born Farid Yu Darvish Sefat on August 16, 1986, in Habikino, a suburb of Osaka, Japan, to a Japanese mother, Ikuyo, and an Iranian father, Farsad Darvish Sefat. His father had left Iran in 1977 to attend school in Massachusetts, where he played soccer and competed in motocross, before enrolling at Eckerd College in Florida, where he met Yu's mother; the couple later moved to Japan, where Yu was born and raised. Darvish's mixed heritage made him a rarity in Japan's largely homogeneous baseball culture, and he has said some Nippon Professional Baseball teams were initially reluctant to draft him in 2004 due to concerns about fan acceptance of his Iranian background — resistance he overcame emphatically once he began pitching. Darvish became a dominant ace for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, posting a 1.99 ERA over seven NPB seasons and establishing himself as one of Japan's finest pitchers before the Texas Rangers won the rights to sign him via the posting system, bringing him to Major League Baseball in 2012. He quickly proved his NPB dominance would translate, developing a reputation for one of the widest pitch arsenals in the majors — MLB's pitch-tracking database has recognized him as the only pitcher to throw nine distinct pitch types. Over more than a decade in MLB with the Rangers, Dodgers, Cubs, and Padres, Darvish has made five All-Star teams and been recognized as one of the league's most technically sophisticated pitchers, mixing an unusually deep repertoire with excellent command.
