Whitney Souness was born on 12 October 1995 (some sources list 12 November) in Porirua, in the Wellington Region of New Zealand's North Island, and attended St Mary's College in Wellington, where she was coached on the school's netball team by former Samoan international Pelesa Semu. Souness was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools side in 2013 and spent time in the national development squad before joining the Central Pulse in 2015, becoming a long-serving fixture of the club's midcourt across a decade with the franchise, interrupted only by a single season with the Waikato/BOP Magic in 2020. Souness made her Silver Ferns debut against South Africa in August 2017, becoming the 167th woman to play for New Zealand's national team, and was part of the World Series-winning Fast5 Ferns squad in 2018, though regular senior selection took several more years to arrive. Souness finally established herself at the top level in 2022 and 2023, winning bronze at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and making her Netball World Cup debut in South Africa in 2023, before signing with Giants Netball for the 2026 season, renowned throughout her career for her speed, feeding skills, and disruptive defensive work in the midcourt.
