Tom Marquand

British flat racing jockey born in 2000, known for his tactical racing style and multiple Group 1 victories including the Prix du Jockey Club

Tom Marquand spent 2024 doing something no jockey gets to do more than once or twice in a career, if ever: riding a single horse, City Of Troy, to wins in the Epsom Derby, the Irish Champion Stakes, the Coral-Eclipse, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in the same season -- a sweep across five of the biggest races in the European racing calendar with one partnership. His route into racing ran through his father William's work as a bloodstock agent, giving him an insider's exposure to the thoroughbred industry well before he ever sat on a horse professionally, and an apprenticeship under a trainer whose methods shaped how he reads a race from the saddle. Marquand's other major wins -- the 2000 Guineas on Poetic Flare, a Breeders' Cup Turf on Tarnawa, multiple Group 1s on Addeybb -- came on different horses for different connections entirely, evidence the City Of Troy sweep wasn't a case of one exceptional horse making an ordinary jockey look brilliant, but a rider who'd already proven himself across a genuinely wide range of horses and yards.
