Born on 22 September 1994 in Cheltenham, England, Tom George began rowing at Radley College, where he first partnered with future Olympic teammate Ollie Wynne-Griffith. He went on to row at Princeton University and Cambridge before joining Leander Club, representing Great Britain at junior level in 2012 and at Under-23 level from 2014 to 2016. George stepped up to senior international level in 2017 and quickly established himself as one of Great Britain's most versatile heavyweight rowers. He won bronze in the men's eight at the 2018 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv and again at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Ottensheim, adding silver in the eight at the 2019 European Championships in Lucerne. At the rearranged Tokyo 2020 Olympics, George won bronze as part of Great Britain's men's eight, then helped the eight to gold at the 2021 European Championships in Varese. He subsequently moved into the coxless pair with Ollie Wynne-Griffith, a partnership that yielded bronze at the 2022 World Championships in Racice, silver at the 2022 European Championships in Oberschleissheim, silver at the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade and silver at the 2023 European Championships in Bled. The pinnacle of George's career came at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he and Wynne-Griffith won silver in the men's coxless pair, having claimed European gold in the same boat class at Szeged earlier that year. In 2020 he also became the first British rower to break 5 minutes 40 seconds for the 2km indoor rowing machine test, a British record he continues to hold.
