Magically elegant Spanish midfielder whose vision, passing and ball control were among the finest the game has ever seen.

Thiago Alcântara do Nascimento was born on 11 April 1991 in San Pietro Vernotico, Italy, while his father, Mazinho, a Brazilian World Cup-winning midfielder, was playing for nearby Serie A club Lecce. Thiago's mother, Valéria Alcântara, was a professional volleyball player, and the family moved between Brazil, Spain, and Italy throughout his childhood as his father's career took him across three countries. As a young boy, Thiago idolised his father, often dribbling an indoor ball around shoes laid out on the floor at home to mimic Mazinho's training sessions. He joined Barcelona's famed La Masia academy at 14, following his father's path through Spanish football, and developed alongside his younger brother, Rafinha, who also became a Barcelona player. Thiago made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2009 under Pep Guardiola, winning multiple La Liga titles, the Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup before Bayern Munich signed him for €25 million in 2013. He reunited with Guardiola in Germany, winning the Bundesliga in each of his first three seasons and developing into one of the most technically gifted midfielders in world football. Thiago moved to Liverpool in 2020, adding a Premier League title and FA Cup to his collection, before retiring in 2024 to become an assistant coach at Barcelona. He earned dozens of caps for Spain, representing his country at Euro 2016, and remains widely regarded as one of the most technically accomplished central midfielders of his generation.
