Susi Susanti was born in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia in 1971. She won the Olympic gold medal at Barcelona 1992 — the first Olympic women's singles gold medal in badminton history — and won the World Championship in 1993 and 1994. She also won four consecutive Asian Games gold medals. She was ranked World No.1 for sustained periods across the early 1990s and was the defining women's singles player of her generation. Her combination of technical precision, court intelligence and competitive resilience made her a role model across Southeast Asia. She was awarded the Olympic Order by the IOC. She later served in leadership roles within Indonesian badminton administration.
