Susan Elizabeth Fuhrmann was born on 30 July 1986 in Katoomba, New South Wales, and moved to Perth with her family at age five. Standing 1.96 metres tall, she became an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder before beginning her senior career with the AIS Canberra Darters and Perth Orioles. Fuhrmann, nicknamed "the Fuhrmannator," made her Australian debut in 2006 and used her considerable height advantage to intimidate opposing shooters, most notably New Zealand's prolific goal shooter Irene van Dyk. She played five seasons for West Coast Fever in the ANZ Championship, becoming a mainstay of the club's defensive circle. Fuhrmann was part of the Australian team that won silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and gold at the 2011 Netball World Championships, and counted playing a Test match in her home city of Perth late in 2011, in front of family and friends, among the standout moments of her career. A trained pharmacist, Fuhrmann retired from international netball following the 2011 season and announced her full retirement from the sport on 2 February 2013, after a chronic knee injury forced her out of the game at just 26.
