Seydou Keïta was born on 16 January 1980 in Bamako, Mali, the nephew of Malian football legend Salif Keïta, and progressed through the Centre Salif Keïta academy before moving to France to join Marseille's youth setup in 1997. He developed into a dynamic, tactically versatile midfielder, equally comfortable in defensive or attacking roles, over spells at Lorient and Lens. Keïta moved to Spain's Sevilla in 2007 before Barcelona signed him in 2008, and he spent four seasons as an important squad player during one of the most successful periods in the club's history under Pep Guardiola, winning multiple La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies, valued for his selfless work rate and tactical intelligence in midfield. Keïta later played in China with Dalian Aerbin before returning to Europe with Valencia and Roma, extending a career that spanned four different countries' top leagues over nearly two decades.
