Sergio Francesco Parisse was born on 12 September 1983 in La Plata, Argentina, to Italian parents — his father, also named Sergio, had played for L'Aquila Rugby in Italy before his work relocated the family to Argentina in 1970. Growing up speaking Italian at home and returning to Italy every year on holiday, Parisse played his early rugby for Club Universitario de La Plata before moving permanently to Italy in 2003 to pursue a professional career. Parisse made his Italy debut in June 2002 at just 18 years old, called up by coach John Kirwan, and went on to become the defining figure of Italian rugby for nearly two decades. Standing 1.96 metres tall, he combined the physicality of a traditional number eight with exceptional ball skills and distribution, renowned as one of the most complete loose forwards in the world game. Parisse spent the majority of his club career with Stade Français in France, from 2005 to 2019, before finishing his playing days at Toulon.
