Satchel Paige was a legendary pitcher who dominated the Negro Leagues for decades before breaking MLB's color-era age barrier in 1948.

Leroy Robert Paige was born on July 7, 1906, in Mobile, Alabama, the seventh of what would eventually be twelve children born to Robert, a gardener, and Lula Paige, a washerwoman — though the exact date was disputed for most of his life, since, as was common for Black families in the segregated South at the time, no hospital birth record existed. (His birth certificate was only tracked down in 1948, when Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck personally traveled to Mobile to confirm it.) He earned his lifelong nickname as a boy working at the local train station, rigging a pole and rope to carry multiple passengers' suitcases at once for tips — a coworker said he looked like "a walking satchel tree." At age 12, Paige was arrested for shoplifting and sent to the Alabama Reform School for Juvenile Negro Law-Breakers, where he spent five years. It was there, on the school's ballfields, that he first learned to pitch and developed the exaggerated leg kick that would become his signature delivery. He turned professional with the semi-pro Mobile Tigers in 1924 before jumping to the Negro Leagues in earnest, and for the next two decades he barnstormed relentlessly — often pitching well over 100 games a year across Negro League play, exhibition tours, and winter ball in Latin America — becoming the biggest draw in Black baseball and, by most accounts, the highest-paid player of his era, Black or white. Paige's legend grew as much from his pitches — the "bee ball," the "hesitation pitch," the "trouble ball" — and his showmanship as from his overpowering fastball. Joe DiMaggio later said he knew he was ready for the majors only after he managed to get a hit off Paige in an exhibition game. When Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color line in 1947, many assumed Paige, already in his forties, had missed his chance; instead, Cleveland signed him in 1948, and he became the oldest rookie in major league history, debuting on his purported 42nd birthday and helping the Indians win the World Series that year. Paige pitched in the majors into his late 50s, making his final appearance for the Kansas City Athletics in 1965 at an official age of 59 — three innings of one-hit ball, thrown to prove a point. He finished his MLB career with a 2.73 ERA across parts of six seasons, statistics that barely hint at two decades of Negro League dominance beforehand. In 1971, Paige became the first player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame primarily for his Negro Leagues career. He died in Kansas City in 1982, having spent his life deflecting questions about his exact age with lines like, "Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."
