Sandra Perković, now known by her married name Elkasević, was born on 21 June 1990 in Zagreb, SR Croatia, and won gold at the 2009 European Junior Championships with a new national record before rapidly progressing to senior international competition. Perković tested positive for a banned stimulant in 2011, later attributed to an energy drink she had used unknowingly; the Croatian federation found no intent to cheat and she served a six-month suspension before returning to compete at the highest level of the sport. Perković became a two-time Olympic champion, winning gold at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Games, and a two-time world champion, in 2013 and 2017, while also winning a record seven European titles between 2010 and 2024, making her the most decorated female discus thrower in history. Perković married her coach, Edis Elkasević, a former shot putter, in 2023, and has continued competing at an elite level well into her thirties, remaining the dominant figure in women's discus throwing for well over a decade.
