Román Alberto González Luna was born on 17 June 1987 in Managua, Nicaragua, and grew up in challenging circumstances that he later credited as central to his development as a fighter, driven by the need to support his family. He was reportedly undefeated across an 88-fight amateur career, winning gold at the 2004 Central American Championships. González turned professional at 18 in 2005, nicknamed "Chocolatito," and developed into one of the most technically complete and avoided fighters of his generation, becoming Nicaragua's first four-weight world champion — from mini flyweight up to bantamweight — surpassing the achievement of his own mentor and boyhood idol, three-weight champion Alexis Argüello. González was widely regarded as the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world during the mid-2010s, before suffering back-to-back knockout losses to Thailand's Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in 2017 that many believed signalled the end of his prime. He rebuilt his career and reputation with a celebrated trilogy against fellow flyweight great Juan Francisco Estrada, one of the finest rivalries in modern lower-weight boxing. González has continued competing at world level into his late thirties, returning to fight in front of adoring home crowds in Managua, and remains one of the most beloved and technically respected fighters ever to emerge from Nicaraguan boxing.
