Ralf Schumacher was born on 30 June 1975 in Hürth, West Germany, the younger son of Rolf Schumacher, a bricklayer, and his wife Elisabeth, and younger brother of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. He began karting at just three years old on a track his parents ran in Kerpen, winning the German Junior Kart Championship in 1992 before moving into single-seater racing. Schumacher won the Macau Grand Prix in Formula Three and the Japanese Formula Nippon title as a rookie in 1996, becoming the first driver ever to achieve the feat in his debut season, before making his Formula One debut with Jordan in 1997, reaching the podium in only his third race in Argentina. Schumacher moved to Williams in 1999, where he spent his most successful years, winning six Grand Prix between 2001 and 2003, including the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix as his maiden victory. He and Michael became the only brothers in Formula One history both to win Grand Prix races. Schumacher later suffered a serious spinal fracture in a high-speed crash at the 2004 United States Grand Prix before moving to Toyota in 2005. Schumacher retired from Formula One in 2007 with 180 starts, and went on to compete in DTM touring cars and work as a broadcaster for Sky Sports Germany. In July 2024, he publicly revealed he is in a same-sex relationship, and married his partner, Étienne Bousquet-Cassagne, in 2026.
