Rafael Devers Calcaño was born on October 24, 1996, in Sánchez, in the Dominican Republic's Samaná province, and grew up idolizing the Boston Red Sox, whose biggest stars during his childhood — David Ortiz, Manny Ramírez, and Pedro Martínez — were all fellow Dominicans. He signed with Boston as an international free agent in 2013 for $1.5 million, just as the franchise was completing its third World Series title in a decade. Devers debuted with the Red Sox in 2017 at just 20 years old, arriving as a hitting prodigy with a powerful left-handed swing, and helped stabilize third base for a franchise that had struggled to find a long-term answer there. He was a key contributor to Boston's 2018 World Series championship team. Devers developed into one of the most feared left-handed hitters in the American League, earning three All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger Awards, before a complicated, public falling out with the Red Sox organization in 2025 led to his trade to the San Francisco Giants.
