Africa's striker of the decade — Arsenal's Golden Boot winner and the fastest player over short distances in the Premier League.
Pierre-Emerick Emiliano François Aubameyang was born in Laval, France in 1989 of Gabonese heritage. Borussia Dortmund developed him into one of Europe's most feared strikers — his pace over short distances was measured as among the fastest of any outfield player in European football. Arsenal paid £56 million for him in January 2018. He shared the Premier League Golden Boot in 2019. He won the FA Cup in 2020 — scoring twice in the final. He was named African Player of the Year in 2015. Arsenal stripped him of the captaincy in December 2021 citing a disciplinary breach before terminating his contract. He joined Barcelona and subsequently won La Liga and the Europa League. He represented Gabon throughout his career — his choice of national team reflecting a loyalty to his father's country rather than the easier path of representing France. His pace, finishing and the celebrity of his lifestyle — the cars, the chain jewellery — made him one of football's most recognisable global personalities.
