Peter Revson was an American racing driver who won two Grands Prix for McLaren in 1973 before being killed testing for the 1974 South African Grand Prix, remaining the last American-born driver to win a Formula One race.
Peter Revson won two Formula 1 Grands Prix for McLaren in 1973 — the British and Canadian Grands Prix — and remains to this day the last American-born driver to win a Formula One Grand Prix, a distinction he carried until his death in a front suspension failure during practice at Kyalami in March 1974. He began racing in 1960 while at the University of Hawaii, and built a versatile career across sports cars, Can-Am, and the Indianapolis 500, winning the 1971 Can-Am Championship, before securing a Formula One seat with McLaren for 1972. Revson finished fifth in the World Championship in his first full season with McLaren, and broke through in 1973 by winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on his 24th attempt, and adding a second victory at the Canadian Grand Prix — his British win coming after a seven-year gap between his two Formula One stints, having originally raced briefly in 1964. Despite his success, McLaren signed reigning World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi for 1974, prompting Revson to move to the fledgling Shadow team. On March 22, 1974, during a practice session at Kyalami ahead of the South African Grand Prix, a front suspension failure sent Revson's Shadow into the barrier at high speed, killing him instantly at age 35. He remains, to this day, the last American-born driver to win a Formula One Grand Prix. Revson was the second member of his family to die in motor racing, following his brother Douglas's death in a racing accident in 1967, and the two are buried together in New York.
