Ukrainian-born Slovak ice hockey right winger who scored 503 NHL goals over 16 seasons, almost entirely with the Washington Capitals, known for his explosive speed and one of the most feared shots of the 1990s.
Peter Bondra was born on 7 February 1968 in Lutsk, in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. His family moved to Poprad, Czechoslovakia, when he was three, and he developed his game in the Czechoslovak league with VSŽ Košice alongside his older brother Juraj before being drafted 156th overall by the Washington Capitals in 1990. Bondra made the Capitals straight out of the draft with no time in the minors, and went on to become the most prolific goal-scorer in franchise history at the time, a record later broken by Alexander Ovechkin. He led the NHL in goals in the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season with 34 and again in 1997-98 with 52, and remains one of only a handful of players to score five goals in a single NHL game, doing so against Tampa Bay in February 1994 in a span of just 24 minutes — still the record for the fastest five goals ever scored. His best chance at a Stanley Cup came in 1998, when the Capitals reached the Final for the first time in franchise history, only to be swept by Detroit. After 14 seasons and 472 goals in Washington, Bondra was traded to Ottawa in 2004, before finishing his career with single seasons at Atlanta and Chicago. On 22 December 2006, he scored his 500th career goal against Toronto, becoming the 37th player in NHL history to reach the milestone. He retired in October 2007 with 503 goals and 892 points from 1,081 games — the fewest points of any 500-goal scorer in NHL history aside from Maurice Richard. Internationally, Bondra became one of the first prominent NHL players to represent Slovakia after the country's 1993 independence, and captained the nation to its first and still only IIHF World Championship title in 2002, top-scoring the tournament with seven goals including the gold medal-winning goal against Russia in the final. He served as general manager of the Slovak national team from 2007 to 2011 and has worked as the Washington Capitals' Director of Alumni Affairs and Business Development since 2017.
He became just the 44th player in NHL history to score 500 career goals when he reached the milestone in 2006.
How They Played
Bondra was a pure goal scorer with an exceptional release and accurate shot from anywhere in the offensive zone. He possessed great speed and timing, often finding open ice to capitalize on scoring opportunities. His ability to score from difficult angles and in traffic made him a constant threat around the net.
Lasting Impact
Bondra helped establish European players as elite offensive forces in the NHL and remains one of the greatest goal scorers in Washington Capitals franchise history.
