Paul Edward Goldschmidt was born on September 10, 1987, in Wilmington, Delaware, and grew up a fan of the Houston Astros after his family relocated first to Dallas and then to Houston. The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted him in 2009, and he debuted in 2011, developing into one of the finest all-around first basemen of his generation, combining power, contact hitting, and elite defense. Goldschmidt led the National League in both home runs and RBIs in 2013, winning the first of his five Silver Slugger awards and four Gold Gloves that same year, and finished as the NL MVP runner-up in both 2013 and 2015 before a trade to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019 extended his prime years further. Goldschmidt finally won the National League MVP award outright in 2022, a career achievement that had eluded him despite years of sustained excellence, leading the league in batting average, OPS, and total bases that season.
