Italian · Cittadella, Italy · Born 18 December 1998Italian volleyball player and outside hitter, considered one of the world's best players, Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time European champion.
Italy had never won an Olympic gold medal in women's volleyball until Paris 2024, when Paola Egonu led an undefeated Italian campaign through the tournament and was named Most Valuable Player — finishing as the second-highest scorer of the entire Games. Egonu grew up in Cittadella, born in 1998 to Nigerian parents who had immigrated to Italy, and began her volleyball career in Italian youth programs before making her professional debut as a teenager. Her ascent to the top of women's volleyball was rapid. Playing for top European clubs including teams in Turkey's competitive league system, her explosive jumping ability and devastating opposite hitter attacking made her one of the most sought-after players in international club volleyball. She captured multiple Champions League titles in the process. Egonu's international career with Italy reached extraordinary heights through the 2020s. She won European Championship gold in 2021, Volleyball Nations League gold in both 2022 and 2024, and delivered the historic Paris 2024 Olympic title — Italy's first in the event. A World Championship gold in 2025 added to a collection that made her the most decorated Italian player in the sport's history. Her powerful spikes, combined with tactical intelligence and court awareness, have made her virtually unstoppable at the highest levels of competition. As one of volleyball's most recognizable figures, Egonu has transcended the sport. Her success has elevated the profile of Italian women's volleyball internationally and inspired a new generation of players. Her performances have set the standard for what elite opposite hitting looks like in the modern game, influencing how the position is played globally.
