Nile Wilson is a British former artistic gymnast who became the first Team GB gymnast to win an Olympic medal on the horizontal bar, taking bronze at Rio 2016.
Bronze on horizontal bar at the Rio 2016 Olympics was the first Olympic medal ever won by a Team GB gymnast on that apparatus, and Nile Wilson earned it in a final alongside Germany's Fabian Hambüchen and America's Danell Leyva in only his second Olympic Games. His development was interrupted by a serious elbow injury in 2005 that kept him out of training for 18 months, but he returned to become one of Britain's most decorated age-group gymnasts, winning five gold medals at the 2014 European Junior Championships — a first for a British gymnast — before making his senior breakthrough later that year with two golds at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Wilson helped Great Britain win a historic first-ever team silver medal at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, then became European champion on the horizontal bar in 2016. His career-defining moment arrived at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where he won bronze on the horizontal bar behind Germany's Fabian Hambüchen and American Danell Leyva, becoming the first Team GB gymnast in history to medal on the apparatus. Wilson enjoyed his most successful championship at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, winning gold in the team event, the all-around, and the horizontal bar, plus silvers on rings and parallel bars. Injuries increasingly disrupted the remainder of his career, and he retired from competitive gymnastics in January 2021 at age 24. He has since become a prominent media personality and content creator, building a large YouTube following, and has spoken openly about experiencing what he described as a culture of abuse within British gymnastics during his competitive career.
