Nicholas Hilmy Kyrgios was born on 27 April 1995 in Canberra, Australia, to George, a house painter of Greek heritage, and Norlaila, a computer engineer who migrated from Malaysia. He attended Radford College and turned professional in 2013, developing into one of the most naturally gifted, if unpredictable, players of his generation. Kyrgios announced himself to the wider tennis world at Wimbledon 2014, defeating two-time champion Rafael Nadal as a 19-year-old wildcard ranked 144th in the world, reaching the quarter-finals in his major debut. He reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 13 in October 2016.
