Nathan Donald Diaz was born on 16 April 1985 in Stockton, California, of Mexican and Anglo heritage, and began training in martial arts at 11 alongside his older brother Nick, learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Cesar Gracie after being inspired by watching Nick tap out much larger opponents. Diaz, along with his brother, became one of the defining sibling duos in UFC history, both known for their high-volume boxing, relentless cardio, and unapologetic "Stockton" swagger, winning The Ultimate Fighter lightweight tournament in 2007 before building a long and storied UFC career. Diaz delivered the two most iconic victories of his career against Conor McGregor in 2016, submitting the Irish superstar in their first meeting before losing a closely contested rematch, in fights that became among the highest-selling pay-per-view events in UFC history. Diaz challenged for the UFC Lightweight Championship in 2012 and remains one of the most beloved and commercially significant fighters the sport has produced, his combative personality and Stockton roots having helped define an era of UFC stardom built on authenticity rather than traditional athletic polish.
