Markus Lynn Betts was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1992. He was a top-ranked junior bowler in the United States before focusing on baseball. The Boston Red Sox selected him in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft. His 2018 season — .346 batting average, 32 home runs, 80 RBI, 30 stolen bases — won him the AL MVP and led Boston to the World Series championship. The Dodgers traded for him in February 2020 for David Price and other considerations — one of the most significant winter transactions in recent baseball history. He won the World Series with Los Angeles in 2020. He signed a 12-year, $365 million extension with the Dodgers — one of the largest in baseball history. His combination of elite hitting, Gold Glove outfield defence — his range and arm are exceptional — and baserunning make him the most complete outfielder of his generation. He finished second in the 2020 NL MVP voting. He bowled a perfect 300 game at a professional bowling tournament in 2020 — the only World Series champion to have achieved a professional bowling perfect game in the same calendar year. Betts collected a fourth World Series title in 2025, turning the championship-winning double play in the 11th inning of Game 7 against Toronto as the Dodgers became baseball's first repeat champions in a quarter of a century.
