Mirko Filipović was born on 10 September 1974 in Vinkovci, in what was then SR Croatia within Yugoslavia, and served as a special forces officer in the Croatian police during the Croatian War of Independence, an experience that shaped his disciplined, no-nonsense approach to competition. Filipović, known by his fighting name "Cro Cop," built an extensive kickboxing career before transitioning to mixed martial arts in 2001, becoming one of the most feared strikers in the history of Japan's PRIDE Fighting Championships, renowned for a devastating left high kick that produced some of the sport's most iconic highlight-reel knockouts.
