Miralem Pjanić was born on 2 April 1990 in Tuzla, in what was then SFR Yugoslavia, to Fahrudin and Fatima Pjanić. When Miralem was two years old, the outbreak of the Bosnian War forced the family to flee, and they settled in Luxembourg, where his father, a former lower-division footballer in Yugoslavia, had to work in a factory to support the family while introducing his son to the sport. Pjanić joined FC Schifflange 95 in Luxembourg at six years old before Metz's academy in France signed him at 14, following a trial in which he trained alongside future international players. At 18, despite representing Luxembourg at youth level, he publicly declared his intention to play only for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country of his birth — a process complicated by his lack of Bosnian citizenship at the time, which FIFA initially rejected before the matter was resolved. Pjanić moved to Lyon in 2008 before Roma signed him in 2011, where he developed into one of Serie A's most technically gifted deep-lying playmakers, renowned for his passing range and free-kick ability that earned him the nickname "The Painter." Juventus signed him for €32 million in 2016, and he won four consecutive Serie A titles in Turin before a move to Barcelona in 2020. Pjanić earned 115 caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the second-most in the country's history, representing his country at its first-ever World Cup in 2014. Fluent in six languages, he retired in 2025 after a final spell at CSKA Moscow, closing out a career built on remarkable technical polish and a journey that began as a two-year-old refugee.
