Michael Kojo Essien was born on 3 December 1982 in Accra, Ghana, to Aba Gyandoh, a baker, and James Essien. He attended Gomoa Nyanyano DC Primary and Junior Secondary School before completing his education at St. Augustine's College in Cape Coast, where his footballing talent first drew wider attention. Essien began his senior career with Liberty Professionals in Ghana's domestic league before moving to France in 2000 to join Bastia, launching a European career that would take him to some of the continent's biggest clubs. After three productive seasons at Bastia, Essien signed for Lyon in 2003, where he won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and was named the league's Player of the Year in 2005 — form that made him one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe. Chelsea signed him in 2005 for a £24.4 million fee that, at the time, made him the most expensive African footballer in history, a reflection of the powerful, box-to-box midfield play that would define his career. Essien became a key figure in Chelsea's most successful era, helping the club win the Premier League in 2006 and 2010, three FA Cups, a League Cup, and, in 2012, the UEFA Champions League — the trophy that had eluded Chelsea for so long. His combination of physicality, tackling, and surging runs from midfield made him a fan favourite, and he twice won Chelsea's Goal of the Season award. He also spent a season on loan at Real Madrid before later playing for AC Milan, Panathinaikos, and clubs in Indonesia and Azerbaijan. Internationally, Essien earned more than 50 caps for Ghana, representing the Black Stars at the 2006 and 2014 World Cups and across three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He has since moved into coaching, serving as an assistant at Danish club Nordsjælland.
