Matteo Berrettini was born on 12 April 1996 in Rome, Italy. He turned professional in 2013 and rose rapidly with his thunderous serve and forehand. In 2019 he reached the US Open semi-finals and the following year qualified for the ATP Finals. In 2021 he reached the Wimbledon final, losing to Novak Djokovic, becoming the first Italian man to reach a Wimbledon singles final. Known for his powerful serve-and-forehand combination, Berrettini has won six ATP titles and reached a career-high ranking of No. 6. He has suffered persistent injuries but remains a top-level player when fit.
