Matteo Berrettini

Italian player known for his booming serve who reached the 2021 Wimbledon final, the first Italian man to do so in the Open Era.

Matteo Berrettini was born on 12 April 1996 in Rome, Italy, to Luca and Claudia Berrettini, both club-level tennis players who introduced their son to the sport, and has a younger brother, Jacopo, who also became a professional player. He turned professional in 2015, developing into one of the most powerful servers in men's tennis, standing 1.96 metres tall. Berrettini became, in 2019, the first Italian man to qualify for the ATP Finals since Corrado Barazzutti in 1978, and went on to defeat Dominic Thiem at that event, becoming the first Italian to win a match at the season-ending championships. He reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 6 in January 2022. Berrettini reached the 2021 Wimbledon final, becoming the first Italian man ever to reach the tournament's singles final, losing to Novak Djokovic, and reached the semi-finals of the 2019 US Open and 2022 Australian Open. His powerful forehand and serve made him one of the most dangerous players on tour when healthy, though persistent injuries have periodically disrupted his career. Berrettini helped Italy win back-to-back Davis Cup titles in 2024 and 2025, contributing a crucial singles win in the 2024 final against the Netherlands, and continues to compete on the ATP Tour as one of Italy's leading players of the modern era.

Berrettini plays an aggressive, power-based game built around his massive forehand and strong serve. He excels on faster surfaces, particularly grass, where his serve-and-forehand combination is most effective. His height and reach allow him to generate tremendous pace from the baseline while maintaining good court coverage.

Berrettini helped elevate Italian tennis to new heights and inspired a generation of Italian players with his Wimbledon final appearance.
