Martin Osborne Johnson CBE was born on 9 March 1970 in Solihull, Warwickshire, England, and was raised in Market Harborough, playing junior rugby at Wigston before joining Leicester Tigers' youth setup. A formative spell in New Zealand in 1989, playing club rugby for King Country, earned him a call-up to the country's national colts team before he returned to England to establish himself at Leicester. Johnson made his England debut in 1993 and developed into one of the most dominant and inspirational locks the sport has produced, renowned for his sheer physical presence and unyielding leadership. He captained the British and Irish Lions on their victorious 1997 tour of South Africa, becoming the first player ever to captain the Lions twice when he led the 2001 tour of Australia.
