Marcos Aoás Corrêa, known as Marquinhos, was born on 14 May 1994 in São Paulo, Brazil, into a footballing family — his father Álvaro owns a beer bar in the city, his older brother Luan played in São Paulo FC's youth ranks, and another brother, Moreno, built a full professional career of his own. Marquinhos joined Corinthians' academy at age eight and was promoted to the first team in 2012, the same year he helped the club win the Copa Libertadores. Marquinhos moved to Roma later that year for around €3 million, impressing enough in a single season, which included a Coppa Italia final appearance, that Paris Saint-Germain signed him in July 2013 for €31.4 million — one of the highest fees ever paid for a player under 20 at the time. He initially found first-team opportunities limited following the arrival of fellow Brazilian David Luiz in 2014, but returned to a central defensive role once Luiz departed in 2016. Marquinhos has since become the most successful and decorated player in PSG's history, taking over the captaincy in August 2020 following Thiago Silva's departure.
