Manny Machado is a power-hitting, elite defensive third baseman who has starred for the Orioles and Padres.

Manuel Arturo Machado was born on July 6, 1992, in Miami, Florida, to Dominican-born parents Manuel Machado and Rosa Núñez. Raised by his mother in Hialeah after his parents separated, Machado grew up immersed in Spanish-language culture at home even as he came of age on Miami's baseball fields. His uncle, Geovanny "Gio" Brito, introduced him to the sport almost before he could walk, and his grandfather, Francisco Núñez — who had grown up in the Dominican Republic — instilled in him a lifelong pride in his family's heritage. Machado idolized fellow Miami-raised infielder Alex Rodriguez growing up, modeling his game after him during countless hours of pickup ball. Machado starred at Brito Miami Private School, and the Baltimore Orioles selected him third overall in the 2010 MLB Draft. He reached the majors remarkably quickly, debuting in August 2012 at just 20 years old and immediately showing the blend of offensive power and defensive wizardry that would define his career. His breakout arrived in 2013, when he made his first All-Star team, won a Gold Glove, and led the league with 51 doubles — defensive comparisons to Orioles legend Brooks Robinson followed almost immediately, and he earned the nickname "El Ministro de la Defensa" (the Minister of Defense). After six seasons in Baltimore, Machado was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers midway through 2018 and helped push them to the World Series. That winter, he signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres — at the time the richest deal in North American sports history — and has anchored their infield ever since. He has remained one of the National League's most consistently dangerous hitters, combining 30-homer power with elite defensive range at both third base and shortstop. Despite being born and raised in the United States, Machado has repeatedly chosen to represent the Dominican Republic internationally, including at the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classics, as a tribute to his parents and grandfather. A seven-time All-Star (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2025), two-time Gold Glove winner, and three-time Silver Slugger, Machado signed a franchise-record extension with San Diego in 2023 to remain the face of the Padres, continuing to anchor an infield that made the team one of the National League's most dangerous lineups through the mid-2020s.
