Luis Fernando Díaz Marulanda was born on 13 January 1997 in Barrancas, a town in Colombia's La Guajira region near the Venezuelan border, and is a member of the indigenous Wayuu community. Raised in difficult financial circumstances, Díaz often played barefoot on dirt fields, developing the close control and comfort on the ball that would define his career, and attended a small football school run by his father, a former amateur player. Díaz did not sign with a professional club until he was 18, joining Atlético Junior's academy after impressing at the Pony Fútbol national youth tournament in 2014. Given his slender build at the time, the club put him on a dietary plan to help him gain weight and physical strength for professional football. He made his senior debut in 2016 and quickly developed into one of Colombian football's most exciting attacking talents. Díaz moved to Portugal's Porto in 2019, where his blistering pace and dribbling ability made him one of the Primeira Liga's standout wingers, winning multiple league titles before Liverpool signed him in January 2022. He became an instant fan favourite at Anfield, winning the FA Cup and League Cup, with supporters embracing him as one of their own despite his journey from one of Colombia's poorest regions. Díaz has earned dozens of caps for Colombia, helping his country reach the semi-finals of the 2021 Copa América, where he won the tournament's Golden Boot, and finish runners-up in 2024.
