Larry Christopher Allen Jr. was born on 27 November 1971 in Los Angeles, California, and began his college career at Butte Junior College before transferring to Division II Sonoma State, where his dominant play as a lineman drew increasing attention from NFL scouts. The Dallas Cowboys selected Allen in the second round, 46th overall, of the 1994 NFL Draft, and he developed into arguably the greatest guard in NFL history, renowned for a rare combination of size, strength, and athleticism that allowed him to play every position on the offensive line except centre during his career. Allen won Super Bowl XXX as the Cowboys' starting right guard, and earned 11 Pro Bowl selections and six consecutive first-team All-Pro honours, being named to both the NFL's 1990s and 2000s All-Decade Teams, a rare distinction shared by few players. Allen retired in 2008 after two final seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013 alongside the Cowboys' Ring of Honor. He died on 2 June 2024, at age 52, remembered as one of the most physically dominant offensive linemen the sport has ever produced.
