American volleyball player widely regarded as the greatest of all time, only player to win Olympic gold in both indoor and beach volleyball
No player in volleyball history has won Olympic gold medals in both the indoor and beach disciplines. Karch Kiraly won three: indoor gold at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Games, then beach gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games alongside Kent Steffes. Charles Frederick Kiraly grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where his father — a Hungarian immigrant and former volleyball player — introduced him to the sport at age six. He excelled at Santa Barbara High School before earning a scholarship to UCLA, where he helped the Bruins win three NCAA championships (1979, 1981, 1982) and was named tournament Most Outstanding Player twice. Kiraly's professional career began with the U.S. national indoor volleyball team in the early 1980s. Standing 6'2" with exceptional court vision and defensive instincts, he became the team's primary setter and floor leader, guiding the country to the 1986 World Championship between the two Olympic golds. After retiring from indoor volleyball, Kiraly transitioned to the beach game in 1989. His partnership with Kent Steffes dominated professional beach volleyball throughout the 1990s, culminating in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold. He accumulated 148 professional beach volleyball tournament victories during his playing career. Following his playing days, Kiraly became head coach of the U.S. women's national team in 2012. Under his leadership, the team captured the 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medal, establishing itself as a global powerhouse. His coaching success, combined with his unprecedented playing achievements across both volleyball disciplines, makes him the most accomplished figure in the sport's history.
